BILLY’S LAST STAND – UNSIGNED SINGLE OF THE WEEK

28 September 2009 / White Label / 3 Trk CDR / Download
By JA

I’ve been a long time admirer of The 66, so this latest demo from Warrington’s finest was very much anticipated. Already renowned for their modern take on loose limbed retro rock n roll, “Billy’s Last Stand” is maybe The 66′s best track to date. The song is riddle with pop highlights and embraces their stadium sized sounds and ambitions. “I have a fire inside me…” sings Daniel Rimmer before dragging you onto a rollercoaster of chanting melodies. It seems an almost impossible task, but they have somehow snatched the spirit of 60′s psychedelic rock n roll and crammed it into another juggernaut bout of 21st century rock.

“Shoot To Kill” finds the band exploring another favourite avenue — clambering, epic, spaced out rock with a thudding beat and melodic mantras. Without breaking much of a sweat, they’re in top gear and broadcasting their magnificent sounds from mountaintops. As if to underline what The 66 : 2009 are, their previous standout demo track “Firefly” is re-recorded with even more finesse and added bits of dazzling electroinica. Bigger, better, action packed stratospheric stuff from the north’s best.
